RE: Camping as opposed to motel.

Good comment, Rubi... Myself and the DW are fans of historic inns and B&Bs as well, and it's just another way we enjoy our travels, along with a few trips to the P.P. each summer in our camper. Some of these establishments are very well run and not in the same league as the chain hotels most people picture in their minds when it comes to such accomodations. Everyone has their own way of having fun, indeed. No two are the same. The notion expressed elsewhere in this thread that non RVers comments are just motivated by jealousy and resentment is snobbish. Reminds me of good old Hyacinth of the British TV series, "Keeping Up Appearances" and her "travel brochures" left out in conspicuous places in the house where she presumed her visitors would see them and be awestruck at her personal wealth. ;)

RE: Your hometown favorite Hamburger and Hot Dog place! Pics!

I don't have a hometown favourite. To get to my hometown favourite I have to cross the border into beautiful Detroit Michigan, and to the nearest White Castle.
Sliders. Mmmmm.

RE: Is proper CG etiquatte fading away?

PSU1999 hit on something - campground operators who pass out those "quicksheets" to visitors on their way in do a great service in terms of education, because I truly believe 99% of these clods who cut through campsites are just clueless... not trying to be jerks or ruin anyone's day. They just don't "get it". (I also agree that if once or twice a weekend someone cuts through is not reason to get all upset either, as long as its not chronic.)

Caddywhompus... that's why I put you on my friends list. I like to keep track of what you are up to. ;) I find your comments very informative and regard you as one of the more practical contributors out here. OTOH, the "chest thumping" I can find anywhere else, if it were to interest me. Keep up the good work!

RE: Fun with GPS

I connect mine (a Garmin 60CSx) to my Nikon D200 camera. Each photograph has the camera location recorded, and can be viewed using Goggle Earth or Panoramio. You will never have to wonder where that photograph was taken!
Tell me more! Does this work with any/all Nikon dSLR cameras, ie. D50 ? I don't own a 60CSx but plan on buying one soon.

RE: What I Did This Past Month - Bariatric Surgery

Good for you! My wife is 2 years out and not only is she different physically (thin) but she's also a different person - more confident and happier. She runs a support group in my area with about fifty members attending monthly meetings, organizing events, etc. Life changing surgery indeed! Now if only the general public and the mass media that feeds it would have a better understanding of bariatric surgery and eating disorders in general. Society has made such great strides understanding other illnesses, such as alcoholism, but the overweight are still discriminated against, as you will probably still remember long after you have reached your goal weight. Again, congrats!

RE: RV Friendly/unfriendly Gas Stations

When I was a teenager working at a gas bar, RV's were regarded as cash cows. They pull up and - as D.R. Bain pointed out - gulp a couple hundred dollars in gasoline. And the family would pile out while it was gassing up and buy a buttload of chips, pop, candy bars, you name it. Then ten minutes or so they'd be on their way again. No big deal. I don't know why any gas station owner would be anything but gracious toward RV driving patrons.

RE: Bought a JUNK 30amp extension cord......Ouch

Did you go back to your dealer with this complaint? I'm curious to hear what they had to say about it. It's not like you bought a discount store extension cord from some dodgy importer.

Converter in Popup Camper

Are there replacement/specialty converters available that will also provide inversion service to the 117v house receptacles in one's camper while on 12v power via house battery? (not connected to power pedestal at campsite, ie. boondocking).
Yes I do understand that a stock converter is not an inverter and that there is a difference between a converter and an inverter. What I am wondering - because it would be much more convenient - if an aftermarket/specialty converter was available that instead of rendering the 117v receptacles dead while boondocking on the house battery, it would double as an inverter, using the house battery as source power.
Right now I carry a portable inverter and connect it directly to a 12 volt battery, then plug whatever I want into the portable inverter, which is working for now but messy, so figured there might be a more streamlined way.
As of now, the only thing I can think of is to unwire the 117 volt receptacles permanently and wire them directly to an inverter mounted under the seat which in turn would feed off the 12 volt system. But that solution means if I do end up camping somewhere and want to plug in to a power pedestal, the 117v outlets obviously won't function as such unless I reverse the operation.

RE: Fun with GPS

matt7591 - got a chuckle out of your remark about "man rule of not asking for directions" - we were travelling with another couple (my best friend driving) and their kids in a tourist town in southwestern Ontario. He wanted to go to a zoo there and despite having a mobile GPS in the minivan he insisted on driving up and down the highway leading into town trying to find this damn zoo and all three of us - including me - took forever to convince him to finally pull over and ask directions. As it turned out, the zoo had closed two years earlier. I love my GPS but sometimes you can't beat the guy at the fruit stand on the side of the road. (BTW, I uploaded Topo maps in mine which I find are most useful for my type of exploring.)

RE: Are there Dog friendly rv parks

Provincial parks in Ontario allow dogs and the Pinery even has a dog beach. Of course, the usual rules apply (but are not always enforced) ie. dog has to stay on leash, all common sense stuff.

RE: Question for ham radio ops at campgrounds.

That's all we need, is to have someone trying to attract lightning and overpowering local TV channels. However, the campground management probably wouldn't every notice, cause they are always checking out campers walking dogs to make sure they pick up after them.
Psst, I'm the guy you keep hearing on Channel two yelling "CQ 6 meters!" in the middle of the ballgame. :)

So, a hard sided camper is a safe place to be in a rip-roaring, severe thunderstorm?
Well, no... my first choice would be under a big tree in the middle of a golf course.

Thirded, WanMan! Traveling gives us that many more options for hiding and finding caches - let's face it, just hunting around the home city can get boring.

RE: 4,000 miles, 18.4 mpg, family of 5: Revenge of the Minivan!

Guest, was in a doozy of a storm coming off Lake Erie last summer while camping. Everyone's stuff was tumbling in the high winds and the five of us (and two dogs, no horses) in the camper all agreed that if the popup was going to fail us, that was going to be showtime. As it turned out we didn't get a drop of water inside and not one component - canvas or otherwise - tore off or failed in any way in the high winds. Had a few other rainstorms during the night and found it was easier to sleep with the patter of rain on the camper. Who knew?

RE: Ham Radio - 4 band vertical mount on Rig

Maybe a welding shop can fabricate something that will mount in your hitch receiver, similar in principle to a bike carrier, assuming your TV is parked nearby? That should be mechanically strong enough for the 4BTV, although I don't know what to do about the ground plane problem. I had a 5BTV for a while and it was a great vertical until I bought myself a chainsaw and cut down a tree nearby with terrible consequences.
